Important People in 17th Century England
- James the 1st- originally known as James 6th of Scotland, had important ties to France and other Roman Catholic Countries, he ruled like a tyrant eventually he died in 1625
- Charles the 1st- son of James 1, ruled similar to his father (as a tyrant), found illegal ways to make money for myself, recalled parliament, led the Royalists into the English Civil War, Charles was found guilty of treason and was executed
- Mathew Hopkins- called the Witch-Finder-General, killed witches for a living, and he was exposed as a fraud and was executed
- Lord Strafford-King Charles adviser, found many ingenious ways of obtaining money for the king, he was handed over to Long Parliament and executed
- Archbishop Laud- King Charles adviser, asked for more money from the king to the Anglican Church, was handed over to Long Parliament to be executed, for money
- Oliver Cromwell- Puritan, leader of the New Model Army, became known as Lord Protector with Rump Parliament ruling, took over Parliament and introduced Blue Calvinist Laws, died in 1658 of nature causes
- Charles the 2nd- son of Charles 1, took the throne in 1660, created the Test Act, and created two political groups called the Tories and Whigs
- Mary and William of Orange- Protestant, called by parliament to be the king and queen of England
- General Monk- commander of the New Model Army, recalled Long Parliament, and believed Parliamentary government must be restored in England
