Protestants vs Puritans
There were two main churches in England both competing for supremacy. The official church of England was the Anglican Church. The king was the head of the Anglican church and he decided how the church was organized. Services and ceremonies were elaborate because the king decided how the church operated. Tax money also went to the church. The main opposition to the Anglican Church was the Puritans or Calvinists. They believed that churches and ceremonies should be simple and plain, opposite to the Anglican Church. Puritans wore dark clothes and lived very sober lives. They strongly disapproved of gambling, drinking and theater considering it hubs of sin. This religion appealed to small landowners and businessmen. Eventually Puritans would become illegal to promote the church of England (Anglican Church). Both churches constantly fought over religion supremacy.
